About the Designer Dennis Clayton: My Aircraft Designs Over The Last 40 Years BIG BIRD 1992
When my son Christopher was 6 In 1992 I wanted to get into the bigger aircraft, so here came along the BIG BIRD design. Powered by a Supertiger 3000 & at 80" span she weight around 13-lbs. The picture with the yellow BIG BIRD is the one that my good friend the late John Campbell owned. John passed away in 1995 from a heart attack while at the flying field doing what he loved, flying R/C. Around 1994 a turtledeck was added to the BIG BIRD. Powered by a G-62 wingspan of 80" & weight of around 18 lbs. This was where the early thoughts started to click in my head about my featured plane the AeroMax was to be born from. Pictured with the plane is the late Frank Mann who finished the aircraft. BIG BIRD with Turtledeck added in 1994
FunStar 40 with RCM Review Nov. -1997
Just a year after my daughter Nicole was born I started to work on another design that would in 1997 would be released in kit form by me. It took 2 full years to kit the plane by myself & around $9,500 invested with 800 hours. The FunStar 40 was featured in the 1997 issue of RCM Review by: Jerry Festa. This plane landed me a designer job offer from Great Planes Models, In which I turned it down. The AeroMax Took to the Sky in 1997 After 3 years of designing & thoughts on how I wanted my NEW design to look. I also wanted a plane that would be very aerobatic yet easy to fly for intermediate pilots. The featured AeroMax was taking shape to become my greatest design to date. The cowling was designed around 3 of the most popular planes at the time. The Ultimate, the Extra 300 & Cap 232 to bring out one of the nicest ahaped cowls at the time. It took 6 months of carving sanding shaping to get plug for this cowl to perfection & to my satisfaction. The AeroMax took flight in 1997 powered by a G-62 at 19 lbs. with a wingspan of 81.5". Now in 2017 the AeroMax is on the verge of making a come back with refinements for even a better aircraft.
